Introduction
Two pairs of antennae, the outer ones are very long and have spines.
The shell is hard and also covered with spines.
Predominantly nocturnal animals that are known to be omnivorous, even carrion.

Maximum length: 60 cm
The first pair of legs bears differently strong and differently constructed claws,
a narrower grasping claw with sharp spines and a larger cracking claw.
If the cracking claw is lost, a new gripping claw is formed at this point during the next moult,
while the remaining gripping claw is transformed into a cracking claw.

Brown shaded carapace with some dark spots.
It has pointed spines above the eyes.
During the day it hides in crevices, at night it can be found foraging in the reef.
Shy, quickly retreats when approached.

Maximum length: 45 cm
Brown to dark purple body, with white spots.
They are difficult to find during the day as they hide in crevices,
but come out at night to forage in the reef.

Can swim backwards quickly if disturbed.
Shy, quickly retreats when approached.

Inhabits rock and coral reefs from one to at least 90 metres deep.
