Introduction

There are currently 27 known species, all of which belong to one genus.

Barracudas have a pike-like, silvery, elongated body covered with small scales.

The head, the fixed eyes and the mouth are large,

the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw.

It is decorated with particularly large fangs.

Depending on the species, they reach a size between 23 cm and 2 m.

Maximum length: 1.90 m

Depth: 3 - 100 m

Tail tip white.

Quite curious, but rather harmless if unprovoked.

Sphyraena flavicauda

Yellowtail barracuda

Maximum length: 45 cm

Depth: 5 - 70 m

This rather small species lives in schools in lagoons and outer reefs.

Depth: 2 - 45 m

Sphyraena picudilla

Southern sennet

Maximum length: 45 cm

Depth: 1 - 40 m +

Long, silvery and slender fish, with light side stripes.

Often swimming along the reef in large schools.

They are shy and often occur deeper in the reef.

These fish are rarely found.
